Join the Board

African Youth Outreach's board of directors is made up of committed individuals who want to further the mission of AYO. The board holds 9 meetings a year to help determine the direction of the organization. If you would like to see about joining the board. Please contact us.

Go to Africa

Every year AYO helps to train volunteers to go to Inguavuma Orphan Care in South Africa to run two summer camp programs. If you would like to go in 2012 please send a letter of interest and 4 references. This coming summer AYO will sponsor camps in the Madison area. AYO will be returning to assist with camps in South Africa in 2012. The volunteer is responsible for air travel to South Africa.

African Youth Outreach is looking for motivated volunteers for our lifeskills education camps in South Africa and in the Madison community. Lifeskills involves teaching children what they need to survive, including HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention, drugs and alcohol abuse prevention, and communication and leadership skills. The children in South Africa are orphaned by the global HIV epidemic or are at high risk of HIV infection. They need this protection as well as a way to feed their hunger for knowledge. Volunteers will receive training to provide this teaching, as well as self-defense training, local language skills, and information about the history and cultures of South Africa. Bring your desire to make an impact, and you motivation to turn this world in the right direction.

Summer 2009

AYO will be sent two teams to South Africa. One team taught camps in Ingwavuma at Ingwavuma Orphan Care, while the other led the first AYO-sponsored camps at De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Trust, which helps feed orphans in their area. Here are the names and blogs of the two teams of volunteers:

Ingwavuma De Wildt
Jessy Annie
Machiko Marsha
Marilee Mary
Megan Ytevia

Read what the 2008 summer team has to say about their AYO experience.

It was an amazing experience. Personally, I found it to be a mutually-beneficial experience in which I had the opportunity to teach the South Africa people about healthy lifestyle choices while, at the same time, they were teaching me life lessons that I wouldn’t have learned anywhere else. It was truly a life-changing trip. – Allyssa

AYO is a strong, passionate organization making a realistic difference through its dedication to promoting education and social justice. Having the opportunity to be an AYO team member is an intensely powerful, altering experience.  –Danielle

AYO offers the unique opportunity to not only see a part of the world not available to the average traveler, but to know for a fact that you are making a difference in the lives of the kids that need it most.- Ken

This organization is all about using education to empower young people to make decisions that will ultimately save their lives and possibly the lives of others.  By sending teams to SA to teach the facts about HIV and AIDS, STIs, rape, as well as drugs and alcohol - and then teach about prevention, AYO is helping to change the devastating statistics of South Africa.- Cheri

Would you recommend this experience to others?

Yes – it is a life-changing experience. It is so rewarding to see the smiles on the children’s faces. It is a culturally-rich experience that helped me broaden my horizons & to put things in perspective. It is a trip I will never forget. – Alyssa

Without question, I would recommend this experience to others. It is a life-changing experience that can not be justified in words. It was a beautiful country, with beautiful people, and a strong, stunning culture. The daily interactions with people and children carry so much meaning. I have never learned more in such a short time.  - Danielle

**Absolutely.  It has been the experience of a lifetime.  - Ken
